چکیده

This paper investigates day-to-day dynamics in urban traffic network induced by departure time dynamics in commuter decisions. This investigation relaxes some key restrictions regarding fixed departure time and equilibrium assumptions to analyze the stability and performance of urban traffic networks over a multiple day planning horizon. A simulation-based framework is developed to analyze day-to-day dynamics by integrating an empirically calibrated model of dynamic departure time decisions with a dynamic network assignment model Computational experiments are used to investigate the effect of the following experimental factors, recurrent network congestion level, time-dependent loading profile, and users’ sensitivity to commute experience and trip-time volatility on network performance and reliability. The findings provide evidence of considerable day-to-day variations and stochasticity in network flows and performance, even under the assumption of fixed routes and in the absence of information. The results indicate that: 1) the network performance under departure time dynamics can deviate significantly from equilibrium, 2) the departure time adjustment process is remarkably stable and reaches stationarity, although the departure time choices do not appear to be at equilibrium, 3) departure time dynamics introduces significant volatility in triptimes from day-to-day, and 4) increasing the sensitivity of users to commute and network performance attributes (schedule delay, trip-time variability) can lead to more stable system behavior and reliability. These results have important implications for estimation of time-dependent O-D matrices, dynamic network analysis, and effective congestion management strategies.

Dynamics of Urban Commuter Behavior Under Real-Time Traffic Information

The effectiveness of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies in enhancing the quality of life in congested urban and suburban areas critically depends on drivers' response to these systems and to the information capabilities that they offer. In particular, Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) aim to improve network flow conditions through the provision of realtime informat...

Commuter Departure Time Choice: a Reference-point Approach

The departure time decisions of commuters are of fundamental importance to the study of peak-period traffic congestion and to the analysis of traffic control as well as broader demand-side congestion relief measures, such as pricing and ride sharing incentives [1]. Over the past decades, there have been very active research efforts in the departure time problem, both in econometric modeling and...

Dynamic Traffic Equilibrium with Discrete/Continuous Econometric Models

A procedure is developed to simulate the spatial and temporal distribution of traffic flows on a simplified highway network for home-to-work commuter trips. The procedure is based on a discrete/ continuous econometric frq, mework in which travelers' choices of route and departure time are modeled. Equilibrium traffic flows are determined using the estimated econometric models in a classic supply...

Airport Congestion Mitigation through Dynamic Control of Runway Configurations and of Arrival and Departure Service Rates under Stochastic Operating Conditions

The high levels of flight delays require the implementation of airport congestion mitigation tools. In this paper, we optimize the utilization of airport capacity at the tactical level in the face of operational uncertainty. We formulate an original Dynamic Programming model that selects jointly and dynamically runway configurations and the balance of arrival and departure service rates at a bu...

Examining the Influence of Tolls on Commute Departure and Route Choice Behavior in the Chicago Region

Supported by general revenues from the State of Texas. 16. Abstract In the United States, a significant number of individuals depend on the auto mode of transportation. The high auto dependency, in turn, has resulted in high auto travel demand on highways. The resulting traffic congestion levels, surging oil prices, the limited ability to address increased auto travel demand through building a...
